Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra
Minutes of the Annual General Meeting, held 7th March 2010
1. Chairman’s Opening Remarks (Vilda Kuby)
The Chairman remarked that the season was going well so far, and that last season had also been good. He thanked the committee for their efforts over the year.
2. Minutes of the last AGM
The minutes of the last Annual General Meeting had been made available via the orchestra website and paper copy for those that required them, so were not read out. The minutes were accepted by the meeting.
3. Matters Arising
Minute Item 4.3. Rakhi Singh has now sent the orchestra a cheque for £400
4. Treasurer’s Report (Paul Cowley)
Copies of the accounts for the previous year were circulated. From a financial perspective, last year had been good as both concerts made a profit.
For the March concert, the Town Hall bill had been reduced by £200 when the Treasurer queried the costs shown. Music hire costs were much less than the previous season, at £300. The orchestra had paid £900 for music hire the season before.
Overall, the season made a profit of £1418.82, which compared very favourable to the previous season, where a loss of £671.47 was shown. Consequently, the balance of funds can be regarded as “healthy”; however, the committee would like to be in a position to be able to fund a season without having to worry about getting an audience in to cover the costs.
5. Election of Committee
All members of the current committee were willing to stand for re-election, and were duly re-elected. Additionally, Sarah Mills (bass) was elected to the committee (Proposed: Martin Wilkinson; Seconded: Joanne Whitfield)
6. Next Season
We are in the fortunate position of having several conductors who are keen to conduct on a regular basis.
6.1. Autumn concert, 13th November 2010:
Conductor – Ian Denley
Sullivan – Di Ballo Overture
Saint-Saens – Piano Concerto No. 2, with Robert Markham as soloist
Brahms – Symphony No. 1
6.2. Spring Concert, 20th March 2011:
Conductor – David Greed
A Rachmaninov piano concerto (choice of 2nd or 3rd, and David has a soloist in mind)
Prokofiev – Symphony no. 7
Overture – Russlan & Ludmilla, or Prince Igor, or Marche Slave
6.3. Venues:
November is likely to Stockton Parish Church or Kings Academy; March will be at Middlesbrough Town Hall.
7. Any Other Business
7.1. Bruce Williams was thanked for his efforts in fixing the orchestra – he’d done a great job!
7.2. Fund-raising Concert. Chris Griffiths was keen to put on a fundraising concert at The Sage, possibly as a repeat performance of the current programme. The orchestra were broadly in favour of this.
7.3. Additional Midweek Rehearsals. These were thought to be a good idea by/for strings. The committee are to consider extra rehearsals again if it felt that they are necessary.
